When we perform criminal searches in 5 states, we may need to take the extra step of verifying criminal records before we can share them with you.  

These 5 states require such verification: 

• California
• Connecticut
• Indiana
• Maine
• Minnesota  

In these states, we must verify our finding of criminal activity at the country court level. 

The local verification process costs more and takes longer than instant criminal searches.

That’s because it takes more time and effort for us to deliver it.

• Previous married names
• Middle names used as first names
• Nicknames and aliases

We order searches of county-level criminal records from individual counties in each state.

Most felony and misdemeanor cases are filed in county courts. 

County criminal record searches are among the most powerful sources for uncovering criminal records.

We order searches of state-level criminal records from state databases.

A statewide search may yield information from multiple counties in the state.

Not all counties report into the state-level database. 

And some counties are inconsistent in their reporting to states.   

Even so, state-level reports are useful for discovering crimes outside of the immediate area in which the subject lives or works.

We order a search of federal-level criminal records from individual US District Courts.

Crimes reported in a federal criminal record include only offenses that are federally prosecuted. 

That is, they are violations of federal law as enforced by these agencies or offices: 

• Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
• Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) 
• Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms bureau (ATF) 

This search does not find violations of local and state law. 

Federal criminal records are not available at the county or state level.
